Relic Entertainment, award winning developers of Homeworld, Dawn of War and the highest rated RTS of all time, Company of Heroes, is looking for an experienced and motivated NARRATIVE DESIGNER to join our team. The Narrative Designer’s primary role is to develop and create the narrative structure of the game. This includes overall story design, characters, setting development and all dialogue (in-game and cutscene). As the primary “story” champion, the Narrative Designer is expected to collaborate with the Lead Designer, Art Director and Cinematic Director to jointly develop a narrative structure that fits within the overall gameplay goals of the project. The Narrative Designer is expected to oversee script development and work as the primary contact with external writers by providing direction and feedback.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Act as the champion of the story, script and speech for the game under the direction of the Lead Designer/Producer
• Understand gameplay requirements and how they affect story development
• Responsible for all narrative-related writing. This includes, but is not limited to: Story Treatments, Character Bios, Cinematic Scripts, Gameplay Scripts, World Setting Materials, Game-related Fiction, Press Releases, Development Blogs, and Presentation Materials
• Responsible for all In-Game Text, this includes but is not limited to: Help Text, Objective Text, Mission Text, Subtitles etc.
• Required to use development tools to implement and edit all narrative related content. This includes, but is not limited to: Mission and Level Design, Audio and Localization Tool, Quest Creation
• All writing must be executed to a high degree of quality in terms of punctuation, grammar and style
• Work with Production to ensure all localization tasks and deadlines are met
• Edit and incorporate all feedback as requested by the project’s stakeholders
• Conduct research to obtain factual background information relevant to story/design goals
• Work with external writing resources to help translate their material to become game relevant, as well as convey game concepts to external writers
• Collaborate with the design department to ensure story and narrative structure works with, and helps drive, the gameplay direction of the game
• Collaborate with the art department to ensure story and narrative structure works with, and helps drive, the artistic and cinematic direction of the game
• Collaborate with the sound department to ensure story and narrative works with, and helps drive, the audio direction of the game
• Work on any area of the game as assigned by the Lead Designer/Producer/Director
• Articulate industry trends, innovative solutions and cutting edge styles that meet the goals of each project
• Support/assist Producer and Design team in other duties, as required
REQUIREMENTS:
• An avid game player with a deep interest in advancing the storytelling in games
• At least 2 years experience in the game industry or has had work professionally published (novels, scripts, comic books etc)
• Exceptional understanding of story structure (script development, dialogue techniques, characterization, world building)
• Exceptional writing skills and ability to develop visual and gameplay theory into production-ready concepts
• Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written
• Solid understanding of Gameplay Theory and how it informs narratives in games
• Knowledge of standard game development tools such as Level Editors, LUA, etc. is an asset
• Knowledge of standard software and hardware used to create, edit, animate, display game sequences, including, but not limited to Flash, Photoshop, Studio Max and Finalcut Pro Previous cinematics and script writing for film on a formalized basis an asset
• A degree in Creative Writing or Film or related field is a strong asset
