Space Marine First Looks

Recently we invited several members of the gaming press to come on over to our place and have a look at a little game we are working on called Space Marine.  Alright, it's not little, it's going to be huge.  Don't take my word for it though, there are a large number of previews and movies below showing the game and talking with Relic Producer Raphael van Lierop.

GameSpot - Space Marine Updated Impressions: "Even from our brief first look at the game running, we walked away impressed by the quality and faithfulness to the series it is drawing so heavily from. It’s clear that the team at Relic is living and breathing the universe it's attempting to re-create, with plenty of fan service going into the game. Melee combat looks like a blast, and we’re eager to get our hands on the controller to cut up some Orks ourselves in the coming months."

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Whoosh! Bam! Space Marine Preview: About five minutes into my demonstration of Relic’s Space Marine  I realise what I’m looking at is a 3rd person shooter that draws heavily from Gears of War, so I ask an obvious question. “Is there some kind of cover system?” Relic man grins. “Actually, the team has an internal line about that. We say, ‘Cover is for Pussies.’”

I don’t take my eyes off the screen, but my ears do a double take. “We do have this though,” says Relic man. With the press of a button he sends Ultramarine Captain Titus running straight through a low wall of cover like a wrecking ball, and begins hacking apart the orks on the other side with his chainsword. “Oh,” I hear myself say, mesmerised. “Right!”

Destructoid - First look: "Check out our special video glimpse of Space Marine, where we give you the lowdown on this really promising action title. Relic wants to compete with the very best titles on the market, and so far I have little reason to doubt that the team can go toe-to-toe with the biggest AAA shooters out there."

Joystiq - Preview: "Relic wasn't yet ready to talk about the game's co-op and versus modes ("All the love that we're putting into single-player is going to get extended over into multiplayer"), or a puzzling menu choice called "The Customizer," but promises that we'll be seeing a lot more as the game moves forward in development."

GamePro - Space Marine Preview: "Having already proven their Warhammer mettle with the critically and commercially acclaimed Dawn of War series of real-time strategy titles, Space Marine serves as the studio's first foray into the realm of third-person action, and even this early on in the game's development cycle, it's obvious that the studio's talents aren't limited to the isometric playing field."

G4TV Space Marine Preview: "The decision to enter into the already crowded sci-fi shooter market is a bold one, but Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine looks to be continuing Relic’s much-lauded traditions of extreme attention to detail and triple-A quality."

GameTrailers.com: Interview with Raphael van Lierop.

Eurogamer.net Space Marine Preview: "Relic truly understands the simple pleasures of the Space Marine's lot, by the looks of it, and it's put the alien splatter front and centre in its new third-person actioner."

CVG Space Marine Preview: "Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is bringing the unique and beloved Warhammer franchise to a cluttered genre filled with established and expected conventions. However, while the game will certainly have to fight an uphill battle to rise up and be noticed, initial impressions indicate that it is headed in the right direction."
